Search Statement Examples

Here are some strategies for search statement language for searching in library databases:

  • Use an * to search for multiple forms of a word in a single search:​​
    • sexual* = will search for: sexual, sexuality, sexualized
    • coloni* = will search for: colonial, colonization, colonists, colonialist(s)
    • masculin* = will search for: masculine, masculinity, masculinist

  • Use "quotation marks" to have multiple words searched together as a phrase:
    • "latin america"
    • "sexual violence"
    • "gender roles"

  • ​Use the word OR (in capital letters) to search for words with similar meaning -- always place within (  ):
    • (prostitu* OR "sex work*")
    • (women OR girls OR female)
    • (19th OR nineteenth)

  • Use the word AND (in capital letters) to combine different topics/concepts:
    • femicide AND "ciudad juarez"
    • (gender OR sexuality) AND "latin america"
    • infanticide AND mexic* AND (19th OR nineteenth)
