Search Statement Examples
Here are some strategies for search statement language for searching in library databases:
Use an * to search for multiple forms of a word in a single search:
sexual* = will search for: sexual, sexuality, sexualized
coloni* = will search for: colonial, colonization, colonists, colonialist(s)
masculin* = will search for: masculine, masculinity, masculinist
Use "quotation marks" to have multiple words searched together as a phrase:
"latin america"
"sexual violence"
"gender roles"
Use the word OR (in capital letters) to search for words with similar meaning -- always place within ( ):
(prostitu* OR "sex work*")
(women OR girls OR female)
(19th OR nineteenth)
Use the word AND (in capital letters) to combine different topics/concepts:
femicide AND "ciudad juarez"
(gender OR sexuality) AND "latin america"
infanticide AND mexic* AND (19th OR nineteenth)
