Newspapers are considered primary sources when one uses them for their reporting written at a particular moment -- which is effectively a first-hand account of an event. Interviews published in newspapers during the historical moment of interest are also considered primary sources. The key is to know the specific date of an event (and to approximate how long after the event newspapers would still be publishing articles about it), the approximate date range of an historical time period of interest, etc., then to select the appropriate newspaper database to search.
