Search Statement Examples

Search statement strategies for searching in all library databases:

  • Use an * to search for multiple forms of a word in a single search:
    • border* = will search for: border, borders, bordering, borderland(s)
    • statistic* = will search for: statistic, statistics, statistical, statistically
    • chronolog* = will search for: chronology, chronological, chronologically
       
  • Use "quotation marks" to have multiple words searched together as a phrase:
    • "agua prieta"
    • "new mexico"
    • "border crossing"
       
  • Use the word AND (in capital letters) to combine different topics/concepts:
    • texas AND mexic* AND border*
    • arizona AND mexic* AND border*
    • california AND mexic* AND border*
    • "new mexico" AND mexic* AND border*
       
    • "agua prieta" AND mexico
      douglas AND arizona AND mexico
      "agua prieta" AND douglas
