Just as you would cite a paper, book, or other textual material in your scholarship, so too should you be citing your images. Even if you have permission to use the image, you still must credit its creator or copyright holder. Sometimes, you will find attribution credit statements with your images, sometimes you will not. Remember to include as much information as is available. Below are a few different methods of citing images, according to common citation styles.

MLA citation for images depends on whether the image exists solely online or is also a physical object.
For a work of art that exists in a museum or outside collection:
Creator's last name, first name. Title of Image or description of image. Year of creation. Gallery or museum where the image is physically
located. Title of website or database. Medium of publication ("Web"). Date of access (Day Month (abbreviated) Year).
Example:
Frankenthaler, Helen. Sundowner. 1974. Unknown current location, photograph
from 2001 exhibition at Ameringer Yohe Gallery. Artstor. "Web". 14 Sept 2018.
For a work of art that exists only online:
Creator's last name, first name. Title of Image or description of image. Date of creation. Title of the website where the image is located.
Publisher or sponsor of the site (if available). Medium of publication ("Web"). Date of access (Day Month (abbreviated) Year).
Creator's last name, first initial. (Role of creator). (Year of creation). Title of image or description of image. [Type of work]. Retrieved from
URL/database name.
