Importance of Citing Images
Just as you would cite a paper, book, or other textual material in your scholarship, so too should you be citing your images. Even if you have permission to use the image, you still must credit its creator or copyright holder. Sometimes, you will find attribution credit statements with your images, sometimes you will not. Remember to include as much information as is available. Below are a few different methods of citing images, according to common citation styles.

Citing an Image in MLA
MLA citation for images depends on whether the image exists solely online or is also a physical object.
For a work of art that exists in a museum or outside collection:
Creator's last name, first name. Title of Image or description of image. Year of creation. Gallery or museum where the image is physically
located. Title of website or database. Medium of publication ("Web"). Date of access (Day Month (abbreviated) Year).
Example: 
Frankenthaler, Helen. Sundowner. 1974. Unknown current location, photograph
from 2001 exhibition at Ameringer Yohe Gallery. Artstor. "Web". 14 Sept 2018.
For a work of art that exists only online:
Creator's last name, first name. Title of Image or description of image. Date of creation. Title of the website where the image is located.
Publisher or sponsor of the site (if available). Medium of publication ("Web"). Date of access (Day Month (abbreviated) Year).
Citing an Image in APA
Creator's last name, first initial. (Role of creator). (Year of creation). Title of image or description of image. [Type of work]. Retrieved from
URL/database name.
Example:
Abbott, B. (Photographer). (1935). Lamport Export Company, 507-511 Broadway, Manhattan. [Photograph]. Retrieved from The Miriam and Ira
D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs at the New York Public Library Digital Collections.
Citing an Image in Chicago/Turabian
Notes/Bibliography Style: Visual resources and images are cited in the notes only, not within the bibliography.
1. Firstname Lastname of Creator, Title of Work, date of creation, name of institution that houses it (if applicable), name of database OR image URL.
Author/Date Style: Please note the different types of citations based on the underlined criteria.

Image from an online source with no creator listed
Title of image. Date created. From site title, URL.
Image from a print source with a creator listed
