CNX 247: Cross-Examining the Witness

Procure witness accounts: collected and published in books

On the Library web site, search DISCOVER for BOOKS:

  • Select the BOOKS tab

  • Type in your search statement
    • Example:  "arab spring" AND (interview OR testimon* OR "personal narrative" OR diar* OR letter OR correspondence OR memoir OR autobiography OR "oral history" OR witness OR "first-person")

  • Search!

  • When you find a book in which you are interested, click on the title of the book to open the full description of it.
    • Note the Library of Congress Subject Headings -- if one of the subjects looks interesting, click on the link to perform a search for just that subject!

  • If you are not satisfied with your results at any moment in the process, consider using some of the filters available -- for instance:
    • Library: Libraries Worldwide -- this really does expand the search to a global cooperative of libraries!

    • Format: Print book
      • Limit to print so that you could ask the library to borrow a copy for you from another library via EZ-Borrow or Interlibrary Loan/ILL!
      • Another option: use Interlibrary Loan/ILL to request PDFs of chapters from books, if you do not need the entire book.
