CNX 247: Cross-Examining the Witness

Discover Historical Scholarship: Books

On the Library web site, library.fandm.edu, search DISCOVER for books/ebooks @ F&M

  • Click on the BOOKS tab.
  • Type in your topic, and add the word university -- doing so will likely retrieve books/ebooks published by scholarly publishers
    • Example: "challenger disaster" AND university
  • Search!
  • Before looking at your results, scroll down the list of options to filter -- under the option Limit To select: Non Fiction

When you find a book in which you are interested:

  • Click on the title of the book to open the full catalog record for it.
  • The publisher information appears under the author information.
    • If the word "university" appears, e.g. Columbia University Press, it is a scholarly book.
      • You will still need to confirm the author is a historian!
      • Also know that historians sometimes publish with non-scholarly publishers -- such books are still good to use!

To discover print books available beyond F&M:

  • Go back to the results page:
  • Change the Library Location to: Libraries Worldwide
  • Select the Source type: Print book--because we can borrow print books (but not ebooks) from other libraries.
  • You can request the library borrow a copy of a book from another library via EZ-Borrow or Interlibrary Loan!
  • You can also request the library obtain a pdf of book chapters via Interlibrary Loan!
