Here are some strategies for search statement language for database searching:

• Use an * to search for multiple forms of a word in a single search:
  • mexic*   will search for: mexico, mexican, mexicano/a, mexicans
  • pregnan*   will search for: pregnant, pregnancy, pregnancies
  • steriliz*   will search for: sterilize, sterilized, sterilization
     

• Use "quotation marks" to have multiple words searched together as a phrase:
  • "puerto rico"
  • "birth control"
  • "sex education"

• ​Use the word OR (in capital letters) to search for words with similar meaning -- always place within (  ):
  • (femicide OR feminicide)
  • (prostitution OR "sex work")
  • (contraception OR "birth control")

• Use the word AND (in capital letters) to combine different topics/concepts:
  • (contraception OR "birth control") AND mexic*
  • women AND health AND peru* AND (indigenous OR indian)
  • "sex education" AND catholic AND "high school" AND mexic*
