Dem Deutschen Wörterbuch wird in der deutschen Wissenschaftsgeschichte zu Recht eine Sonderstellung eingeräumt, handelt es sich doch um das deutschsprachige Wörterbuch mit der längsten Bearbeitungszeit und der bei weitem umfangreichsten Erfassung der deutschen Sprache.
Im Jahr 1838 gelang es dem Philologen Moriz Haupt und dem Verleger Karl Reimer, Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm für das Projekt eines großen neuhochdeutschen Wörterbuchs zu gewinnen, dessen Gegenstand die Darstellung des hochdeutschen schriftsprachlichen Wortbestandes in seiner Entwicklung und seinem Gebrauch von der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts bis zur Bearbeitungsgegenwart werden sollte. Als die Brüder Grimm die redaktionelle Ausarbeitung des Deutschen Wörterbuchs (¹DWB) aufnahmen, veranschlagten sie dessen Umfang auf sechs bis sieben Bände, die Arbeitszeit auf zehn Jahre; tatsächlich erschienen in mehr als einhundert Jahren 16 Bände in 32 Teilbänden, auf deren insgesamt 67.744 Spalten Generationen von Lexikographen weit mehr als 300.000 Stichwörter behandeln, und ein separates, rund 4.000 Quellen umfassendes Quellenverzeichnis.
