CNX 268: Researching Lancaster

Search this database for scholarship broadly related to your topic and/or specific to Lancaster.  

For content broadly related to your topic, type in your search statement and search!  Some sample search statements:

Example 1:  immigrants AND education

Example 2:  "refugee resettlement"

Example 3:  (traffic OR transit) AND cities

Example 4:  segregat* AND housing

Example 5:  philanthrop* AND (local OR regional)

For Lancaster-specific content, you can search for references to articles published in the Journal of the Lancaster County Historical Society by doing the following:

• In the first search box, type in: journal of the lancaster historical society
  • then "Select a Field": SO Publication Name
• Type your search statement in the next search box.  Search! 
• If you find a reference to a useful article, go to the Ground Level of the Shadek-Fackenthal Library, and look for the range of shelves featuring the title Lancaster County Historical Society.  (Note: if the article was published in the past few years, check the Periodicals Room first!)

For your assignment, search JStor specifically for articles published in Pennsylvania History and The Pennsylvania Magazine.

• In the database, click on the Advanced Search link.
• On the search page, scroll down and type the title of the journal into the Publication Title box:
  • pennsylvania history
  • the pennsylvania magazine
• Scroll back up to the top of the page, and type lancaster into the first search box.
• Next, type in your search statement in the next search box.
• Under the heading Narrow By, select: Articles
• Search!

To perform a general, exploratory search in Discover:

• Start at the F&M College Library web site: library.fandm.edu
• Click on the BOOKS tab.
• Type in your search statement (see examples elsewhere on this page!)
• Note: if you want to make your search specific to Lancaster, add the following to your search statement: "lancaster, pa"
  • Example: amish AND health AND lancaster AND pennsylvania
• Search!

To discover print books available beyond F&M:

•  On the results page:
  • Change the location to: Libraries Worldwide
  • Source type: Print book--because we can borrow print books (but not ebooks) from other libraries...
  • At the top of the page, confirm results are sorted by: Best Match

On the database homepage under "Quick Links" you will see several options to search local and regional newspapers -- scroll down until you see the button for Lancaster Papers. 

Use EZBorrow (EZB)/Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to request articles, book chapters, books, and other materials not available at F&M.
