Connections 1

Information Literacy in the Connections Curriculum

Take students on a customized tour

Many first-year students express anxiety about not knowing how to use the library independently, and find both library buildings overwhelming and confusing.

In consultation with you, the librarian will design a tour of one or both library buildings.

Common tour elements include:

  • Encouraging students to consider the library theirs.
  • Explaining the role of the librarian.
  • Discussing the nature and scope of the collections.
  • Explaining the key services:
    • Circulation  |  Reference/Research Assistance  |  EZ Borrow  |  Interlibrary Loan
  • Noting the available technology:
    • printing  |  scanning  |  the SparkSpace in Shadek-Fackenthal
  • Touring the stacks--the tour could feature:
    • a visit to stacks locations relevant to your course
    • defining what "stacks" means
    • explaining the value of browsing the book shelves
  • Noting the locations of :
    • quiet study areas
    • light switches
    • coffee and food vending
