The Human Library

From humanlibrary.org: “The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue.” The first human library was held in Denmark in 2000, and since then these events have been hosted in a variety of places around the world (http://humanlibrary.org/human-library-organizers/). In this event, people volunteer to be “books.” Books can come from both the campus and community to share their personal story and provide a forum for the reader to engage in conversation and ask questions. Participants will “check out” a book for a specified time slot to hear the book’s story and have a conversation.

Program Goal: Participants will engage in active listening and constructive dialogue with an individual book in order to analyze their personal prejudices, misconceptions, stereotypes, etc. concerning the book’s story.
