Search Statement Examples
Here are some strategies for search statement language for searching in library databases:
Use an * to search for multiple forms of a word in a single search:
feminin* = will search for: feminine, femininity, feminism, feminist
socializ* = will search for: socialize(d), socializing
Use "quotation marks" to have multiple words searched together as a phrase:
"higher education"
"domestic violence"
"gender equality"
"sex work*" = will search for
sex work, sex workers
"hegemonic masculin*" = will search for
hegemonic masculinity
,
hegemonic masculinities
Use the word OR (in capital letters) to search for words with similar meaning -- always place within ( ):
(sports OR athletics)
(women OR female)
Use the word AND (in capital letters) to combine different topics/concepts:
"sexual assault" AND college
"gender equality" AND (sports OR athletics)
gender AND emotions AND socializ*
