Database Spotlight: Worldcat

WorldCat is the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) catalog of books, web resources, and other material worldwide. Worldcat contains:
  • over 41 million records
  • materials dated before 1000 BC to present
  • records representing 400 languages
  • materials including: books, computer data files, computer programs, films and slides, journals, magazines, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, newspapers, sound recordings, and videotapes
  • but NOT including: book chapters, or individual articles in journals, magazines or newspapers
WorldCat is 100 times larger than our Library Catalog, so there's a good chance you will need to use Interlibrary Loan to obtain items found in WorldCat. It's always a good idea to choose the Libraries link within a record to determine how many libraries hold an item. This might give you some idea how quickly Interlibrary Loan can process your request.

WorldCat has been recently revised to include better navigation and searching capability. Below is a a snapshot of a sample search. Take a look at this WorldCat User Guide for tips on efficient searching, or consult a librarian for assistance.
