Experience/Background
I've been lucky enough to be a student or work in academe all of my
life, except for times between school
years and graduate degrees. I grew up and went to college in rural Ohio,
and have lived in Memphis, Pittsburgh, Bologna and Lancaster. I've worked as
a librarian at Carnegie Mellon University, Johns Hopkins' School of
Advanced International Studies, and Franklin and Marshall.
Degrees and Education
M.L.S. - Kent State University, 1996 M.A. - University of Memphis,
Philosophy, 1995 B.A. - Hiram College, English and Philosophy, 1990
Professional Interests
I became interested in reference work when I was hired as a Reference
Assistant at the University of Memphis. A librarian there convinced me
that I could make a career of it, and here we are. I'm interested now in
how we introduce students to academic research. Students of all levels
and ability have grown up using the Web, and making and understanding
the leap from that to more scholarly work is an educational effort for
all involved. Other interests currently include what we do with library
spaces and environments, international trends in libraries, and the future of our profession.
What I Do At Work
As Deputy College Librarian, I serve as the "acting" College Librarian whenever she is away from campus.
As Reference Services Librarian, I coordinate the Library's reference services, including all electronic
databases and various methods of research assistance, from the
traditional desk to instant messaging. I act as the library's liaison to
the Philosophy and Psychology departments, and the programs in
Biological Foundations of Behavior (BFB), Scientific and Philosophical
Studies of the Mind (SPM), Math and Computer Science, and Science, Technology and Society (STS).
I'm also involved in planning a redesign of parts of our library,
managing the electronic and print reference collection, GoPrint,
LibQual, and teaching library instruction classes.
Otherwise
I'm married to an amazing person and together we manage a little boy,
rehab a house and get along pretty well. You can reach me almost anytime
at any of the contacts to the left.
