Acquisitions
The Acquisitions Department is responsible for the execution of the Library's Collection
Development policies. To do so, it performs all purchasing, receiving, payment and budget monitoring
for all materials in all formats added to the Library's collections, accessed electronically and
received under U.S. Documents Depository Status. It also insures the initial placement and renewal
of all hard copy and electronic subscriptions, standing orders and licenses for services and
products available at the Library or through its website,and is responsible for ERM. In addition,
the Department prepares all serial commercial binding and serial in-house binding.

Administration
The Library's Administration provides the glue that keeps the staff together and the oil that keeps things
running smoothly. In particular, questions on budget, staff and student hiring, facilities, supplies,
and general library policy can be directed here.

Archives & Special Collections
Archives and Special Collections is responsible for maintaining, promoting and preserving both
the visual and written record of the college (as the college archives) and the special collections
of the library. Special collections include published material such as rare books, maps, newspapers,
posters and prints, and unpublished material such as the personal, legal and business papers of
prominent local individuals, families, organizations or businesses. Reference services are provided
to faculty, administration, students, alumni and members of the public interested in the history of

Cataloging
The Cataloging Department is responsible for processing library materials which have been purchased
by the Acquisitions Department or donated. Most of the bibliographic records are downloaded from
OCLC (Online Computer Library Center)--a database of over 60 million records. The records are then
verified and edited to match the item. Cataloged materials are barcoded, bookplated and labeled.
Cataloging also handles the repair and binding of books, as well as transfers and withdrawls.

Circulation
The Circulation Department checks out, checks in, and shelves library materials. Reserve items are
also circulated by this department. You must have a barcoded ID to borrow any library materials. Go

Collection Development
Collection Development is responsible for developing and maintaining the library
collections. This involves developing policy; managing the liaison system, in which all librarians
participate; providing selection aids, such as reviews, announcements, publisher's advertisements;
operating the university press approval plan; handling gift books and determining which will be added
to the collection; and overseeing the preservation of the library collections.

Interlibrary Loan
The Interlibrary Loan Department obtains library materials or copies of library materials for
current FPS and students. In addition, their mission is make every effort to quickly provide
materials to outside libraries via US mail, fax, Ariel and UPS. It should be understood that the
material supplied is to complement but not duplicate the requestor's collection. See the

Martin Library of the Sciences
The Science Library houses the book collection for the natural and physical sciences, science
reference materials, scientific periodicals, and related government documents. The Science Library
also contains an extensive collection of geologic maps and other special scientific materials except
for selected resources in psychology that can be found at the Psychology Library in Whitely
Laboratories. Most non-print materials are housed in Academic Technology Services but a small video
collection is available in the Science Library. Services include reference assistance, interlibrary
loan and library instruction. Additional information can be found on the

Reference and Instruction
Reference Services provides assistance with all library resources and information needs to all
library users. Questions are answered in person at the Reference Desk, through e-mail at
Ask Andy, via IM at username askandyfum, and by
phone at 291-4217. In-depth, individual assistance is provided through
Research Appointments with a Reference Librarian. The Department
also promotes Information Literacy through its
Instruction activities
for F&M courses (at faculty request), and workshops for college staff. The library's rich Reference
Collection of print and electronic resources is developed and maintained by the Reference Librarians.

Systems & Computing
Systems manages all online systems; software and databases; public and office computers and printers;
and library webpages. Edits and additions to the library catalog are made daily. Frequent additions
are made to the list of library-supported online databases. Every attempt is made to keep computers
and printers in optimal condition. And the library website is routinely edited to meet the needs
of college departments and specific classes, and promote Library services.

Visual Resources
The Visual Resources Collection, located in the Department of Art and Art History, is a collection
of more than 100,000 35mm slides and digital images. Holdings represent world art, architecture,
and visual and material cultures, prehistoric to contemporary.
