New-Course Library Materials Grants

General Purpose

To enable faculty members preparing new courses to build the library collection in support of those courses, the library book budget provides New Course Grants.

Size of the Grants

New Course Grants are $500 each. Once the library's General Grants allocation is exhausted, no further grants will be issued during that year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a New Course Grant, the course must be new to the curriculum and have Program Review Committee and Educational Policy Committee approval. Topics courses, which you intend to offer on a regular basis, are also eligible.

Since the number of New Course Grants available is typically less than the number of new courses approved, the determining factor for a successful grant application will be the ability of the existing library collection to support the course. Each faculty member may not receive more than two grants of any type during a fiscal year.

Applications

Applications for New Course Grants should be made, in writing, to Tom Karel, Collection Development Librarian. The application should specify the name and number of the course, when it was approved, and when it is to be offered. The application should include an assessment of the existing library collection in support of this course. The application should be signed by the faculty member and by the liaison librarian for the department..

Standards of Book Selection

Selection of books ordered on these grants is to be done in accordance with the Library's Collection Development Policy and any library selection policy which the department may have. These funds are to be spent on books to be used by students in a course or by the faculty member in preparing for a course, but not for a faculty member's research.

These funds cannot be used to initiate a new periodical subscription or standing orders, since these are ongoing commitments.

Submitting Book Orders

Orders should be submitted to the liaison librarian on regular library book request forms. The word "Grant" should be in the "Dept." space on the order form. All funds are to be committed by March 31, or they will revert to the library.

Access to Other Library Funds

Receipt of this grant should not decrease the amount of access the faculty member has to the regular department library allocation.
