The resources below have been separated into three broad categories; popular, scholarly, and general websites. Produce one useable article from each category. You may need to find and evaluate a number of articles to find three that fit your needs.

Popular Resources

  • These periodicals may be quite attractive in appearance, some are in newspaper format.
  • Articles are often heavily illustrated, generally with photographs.
  • News and general interest periodicals sometimes cite sources, though more often do not.
  • Articles may be written by a member of the editorial staff, a scholar or a free lance writer.
  • The main purpose of periodicals in this category is to provide information, in a general manner

Connections to newspaper articles, including New York Times and Washington Post. Coverage is only within the last 10-15 years.

Readers' Guide Full Text
Indexes over 200 popular U.S. general interest periodicals. Covers 1983 to the present.

Wilson Select Plus
Contains full-text articles from 800 periodicals. Covers 1994 to the present.

Scholarly Resources

  • Scholarly journals generally have a serious look, with few glossy pages or exciting pictures.
  • Scholarly journals always cite their sources in the form of footnotes or bibliographies.
  • Articles are written by a scholar or researcher in the field.
  • The main purpose of a scholarly journal is to report on original research or experimentation
  • Many scholarly journals are published by a professional organization.

Online version of the 34-volume text covering all forms of the visual arts from prehistory to the 1990s. Includes 41,000 articles and 10,000 color images.

Art Full Text
Variety of international English-language arts publications. Indexing from 1984 to present, abstracting from 1994 to present.

Encyclopedia Britannica (with Webster's Dictionary)
Latest article database, including articles not in the print edition, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, and the Britannica Book of the Year (1994 - present), with thousands of web links selected by editors.

General Websites

You could use most any web search engine. I am partial to Yahoo! since it attempts to edit, and organizes websites into categories. Be sure to keep in mind a few evaluation points as you review these and other websites.
