The same VPN Client that is used to authenticate and use the college wireless network, can also be used to authenticate and use Library resources when you are not on the campus network. Be sure to choose "fandm-internet" in the VPN window. Background information regarding VPN can be found here. If you do not already have a VPN Client (check Applications folder), go to the Software Server to download software - tutorial can be found here. Additionally, there are tutorials available to demonstrate how to connect using VPN, for Mac and PC.

NEW INFORMATION - a web-based VPN interface is available at this link. Web-based VPN is not supported by Computing Services, but does provide an authentication option if it is not possible to install VPN software. Quit the browser to disconnect from web-based VPN.

What if I'm unable to install VPN, but still want off-campus access the Library's online resources?
You will need to install proxy settings in your System Preferences. We have tutorials for OS 10.2, OS 10.3 and PC. If you are using Mac and Firefox, you will need to establish proxy settings within the browser. Launch Firefox > go to Firefox Preferences > at General choose Connection Settings > select Manual Proxy Configuration > at HTTP Proxy enter proxy.fandm.edu and 3128 for Port, then OK, and OK again. Subsequent use of Firefox will prompt for F&M username and password. Deselect Manual Proxy Configuration if you wish to discontinue proxy access.

Where did my file go // Why won't a file open // Why can't I SAVE my file?
Most likely your file was saved to the local Microsoft Office folder. Always SAVE your file from the start, always SAVE to your eDisk Desktop, and always SAVE! // Files may not open without extensions, like .doc for WORD or .xls for EXCEL. Save file to your eDisk Desktop and apply extension. Consult with professor if file will still not open. You may have exceeded your eDisk space. // Trash any files in Desktop, Private or Public folders that are no longer needed. Consult with Computing if you still can't save.

NEW INFORMATION - Your eDisk preferences may not be in sync with local machine applications. Open the Finder, go to your eDisk account, identify the Library folder, and find the Preferences folder. You can rename or discard the Preferences folder. After logoff and login, you should be able to operate normally in your eDisk environment.

ADDITIONALLY - It could be that your eDisk account is full. Open Finder, select your eDisk account and take note of the available space as shown at the bottom of the Finder window. If space available is near zero MB, discard an unnecessary files in your Desktop, Private and Public folders, then empty Trash. After logoff and login, you should have sufficient space to operate normally in your eDisk environment.

My F&M uniform password, or Blackboard password doesn't work?
First check to be sure there isn't a larger issue regarding authentication (ex. other students can't access eDisk). If your F&M uniform password doesn't work, visit http://password.fandm.edu to establish a new password. Additionally, you can determine your current allocation of eDisk space while at the Password webpage. If you are unable to access your course Blackboard website, again, there may be a password issue. Visit http://ats.fandm.edu. Under "Quicklinks" you should find help regarding your Blackboard account and password.

How can I connect with wireless?
First, establish that you can access a wireless hub. On a Mac, be sure that you have an installed Airport card, and that it is turned on, and that you are finding the best possible hub. Next, you will need to (possibly) install and use VPN (Virtual Privacy Network) to properly authenticate on the college wirless network. If you do not find VPN in your Applications folder, connect with ethernet and go to the Software Server and install the newest VPN software. We have tutorials for OSX and PC to demonstrate how to install VPN software. Ethernet cable connections can be found on the Mezzanine level in Shadek, and in the computer workroom in Martin. If you have any problems or need assistance with this installation, email or call Computing Services at helpdesk@fandm.edu or 358-4483.
