RUS 376: Reading Dangerously: Women in Flaubert, Tolstoy, and Checkhov

Brainstorming and Books

Since this your very first class of the term, and you have no idea what topic you might research, NOW is a good time to generate some ideas and do a bit of background reading, to define a topic that appeals to you. There are obvious keywords, that will yield predictable search strategies...

women and (flaubert or tolstoy or checkhov)

Library Catalog
You will find that many relevant books are already on RESERVES for this class. It will still be worthwhile to explore the PG3300 to PG3500 call number range on the Mezzanine Level, and PQ2200 call number range on the First Level.

WorldCat
You may need to expand your BOOK research in Worldcat, the world's largest academic union catalog. Experiment with searching in Worldcat, and examine full records and subject headings. You can

  • Interlibrary Loan books or articles the F&M Library does not own.
  • Also use E-Z Borrow to obtain books from Pennsylvania academic libraries. ILL and E-Z Borrow are fantastic services, but PLAN AHEAD so you have plenty of time to obtain, review and assimilate resources.
  • Journals - Indexes, Abstracts & Full Text Resources

    JStor
Good all around source for full-text. Be sure to choose SEARCH and ADVANCED SEARCH. JStor is particulary strong in the areas of Language & Literature. Feminist & Women's Studies might also be worth exploring.

    MLA Bibliography
The MAJOR MAJOR index of articles, book chapters and essays in literature, languages, and folklore. Covers 1963 to the present. Since this resource is SO comprehensive, you will most likely need to use Interlibrary Loan to obtain materials from other libraries.

    Historical Abstracts
Comprehensive international historical coverage (excluding the U.S. and Canada) from 1450 to the present. Covers abstracts from 1955 to the present.

    Readers' Guide Retrospective
Comprehensive indexing of 500 of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States and reflects the history of 20th century America. The complete database covers the years 1890 through 1982.

    Religion Index (ATLA)
Comprehensive database in religious and theological scholarship. Includes index citations, journal articles, essays in multi-author works, and book reviews from ATLA's print indexes: Religion Index One (RIO), Religion Index Two (RIT), and Index to Book Reviews in Religion (IBRR). Covers from 1949 to the present.

What to do if you get stuck

We have an EXCELLENT service Meet With a Librarian, where you can review research with a librarian (probably me!) for 30-60 minutes, and get on the right track for print and online sources. You can also contact me directly (see below).
