Introduction to the Franklin & Marshall College Library
The Library supports the mission of the College by providing scholarly resources vital to liberal
education and by teaching the research skills necessary for lifelong learning. The Library is committed
to developing knowledgeable information consumers. With this in mind, librarians and professional staff
partner with faculty and students to enable effective location, access, evaluation and ethical use of information.
Shadek-Fackenthal Library
The Shadek-Fackenthal Library
features book and journal collections in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Shadek-Fackenthal is also home to domestic and
international newspapers and magazines, the Browsing collection of leisure reading,
plus the College Archives & Special Collections.

A fob is required to enter the building after 9:00p.m. Building hours are extended at the end of each semester.
Shadek-Fackenthal Library Services
- Ask Me/Reference desk: The desk is the place to consult with a librarian about all things library and research related,
plus anything else about which you are curious! Librarians are also available by phone, e-mail and IM. For a full listing of
"ask" options, see Ask Andy on the library's web site.
- Circulation desk: For checking out books, plus picking up books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and E-Z Borrow. Students may check-out
up to 50 books at a time, each item for 4 weeks/28 days. Your F&M ID is required! To renew books log into My
Account. You may also request renewal by phone - simply call
717-291-4223. Fines for overdue books are $0.25 per day, per book.
- Reserve desk: For checking out course materials as designated by professors. Your F&M ID is required!
- Computers, printers, etc.: Fully networked and software-loaded Apple® computers, printers for black & white printing, photocopiers,
change machines and microfilm reader/printers are available for your self-serve use. The entire library is also wireless!
Martin Library of the Sciences
The Martin Library of the Sciences
features book and journal collections in the Life and Physical Sciences, plus Mathematics, Psychology and Computer Science.

Organization of Materials in the Library
Most academic library resources
are organized using the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System, and
assigned an LC Call Number. Library of Congress Call Numbers consist of a combination of letters
and numbers, and are arranged in an alphabetical, numerical, and chronological
sequence. Always read a book's spine label call number from left to right,
top to bottom.
