Reynolds Family Papers

MS 6

Scope and Content

The collection consists of letters, diaries, scrapbooks, hand-drawn maps, clippings, photographs, transcripts, war communications and books. Some of the items were first assembled by members of the Reynolds family in the mid-1860s, with family ownership of the material being continuous up until the transfer of the collection to Franklin and Marshall College. It is the understanding of the department that items relating to the daughters of John and Lydia Moore Reynolds have been retained by the family.

The earliest item in the collection dates from 1756 with the bulk of the material covering the period from 1830 - 1880 and consisting of mostly William Reynolds (1815 - 1879) and John Fulton Reynolds (1820 - 1863) items.

Scrapbooks were compiled by Eleanor Reynolds. Books (monographs) that are included in the Reynolds Family Papers are probably from the personal library of James Lefevre Reynolds. These books are listed at the end of the manuscript collection inventory. The journals which William Reynolds wrote during the U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842 are available on microfilm. William's unofficial journals are also available in published format (abridged) as The Private Journal of William Reynolds edited by Nathaniel and Thomas Philbrick, New York: Penguin Books, 2004. An unabridged transcription of these journals is also available in electronic format. Letters written by William Reynolds to his family during the expedition and numbered 1-21 are available transcribed and published as Voyage to the Southern Ocean: the Letters of Lieutenant William Reynolds from the U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 edited by Anne Hoffmann Cleaver and E. Jeffrey Stann, Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, 1988.

In 2003, portions of the Reynolds Family Papers were digitized with the support of a 2002 NETShare grant award. The award program is an extention of the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), and is administered in Pennsylvania through the Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

The digitized portion of the collection can be accessed at the following address:

Restrictions

There are no restrictions on the use of the collection by researchers other than patrons will be referred to published and digitized material where available. However, publication of William Reynolds' "unofficial journals" and U.S. Exploring Expedition letters Number 1-21 are restricted by copyright. It is the responsibility of the researcher to notify the Archives & Special Collections Department of any intent to publish the contents of the manuscript material and/or other items in the collection.

Provenance

The bulk of the Reynolds Family Papers were donated to the Archives and Special Collections Department on two separate occasions, in 1955 and 1962, by members of the Reynolds family. The donors were: Mrs. John Fulton Reynolds Scott, wife of John Fulton Reynolds' grand nephew; Katharine Hoffman Kline, grandaughter of Lydia Reynolds Evans; and Mary Reynolds Kline Shannahan, daughter of Katharine Hoffman Kline. The papers had been in the possession of the family up until the time of the donation to the college.
