Head Quarters, Cavalry Corps
6.15 A.M., June 18, 1863
To Maj. Genl. Meade,
Comdg. 5th Corps,
Gum Springs
General,
My loss yesterday
was four officers killed and 6 wounded, and about 150 men in killed and
wounded. I took 9 officers &
74 men prisoners and punished the Rebels badly. I am sending out reconnaissances today towards Winchester
and that vicinity as well as below and will keep you advised. Please let me know if you receive
orders to move. I shall hold Aldie
for the present. My impression is
there is no infantry this side of the Blue Ridge; shall know today. The raid into Pennsylvania was made by
Mosby, Jenkins and White’s guerrillas, so prisoners say; rather small
potatoes for such a fuss as has been made.
Very truly Yours,
(signed)
Pleasonton
Col. Cesnola who had
the daughter, is missing, supposed to be a prisoner. I had one Colonel killed, Dotey of 1st Maine.
