Headquarters, 5th Army Corps
June 13th, 3.40 P.M. [1863]
Maj. Gen. Reynolds:
The commanding
General has directed me to be ready to move to-night or to-morrow morning on
the Orange and Alexandria R.R. I
have just returned from Headquarters where he verbally directed me immediately
to send all my trains to Morrisville, and to withdraw my forces after dark at
the same time. He intimated the
order for my movement and route to be taken would come from you. I have issued orders to Sykes and
Barnes to send their trains at once to Morrisville. After dark Sykes will withdraw and concentrate his Division
at Hartwood; Barnes will withdraw and concentra[te his?] at Morrisville; both
will leave pickets to be relieve[d by?] cavalry, which Gen. Hooker said you
would forw[ard … ] to U.S. ford; and Hancock is to furnish[?] for [
… ] Ford. Is this all right
in your opinion, and what road do you wish Sykes and Barnes to take, and what
hour to move? Let me know as soon
as possible.
Geo. G. Meade,
Maj. Genl.
