Camp near Falmouth, June 11th 1863

Major Genl. Sedgwick

General,

The march of Genl. Reynolds’ Corps (ordered) makes it necessary that you should establish a line of pickets from the Rappahannock to the Potomac on your left by the shortest line.

The force to be sufficient to prevent any spies, informers, deserters, or others passing the lines.  General Reynolds estimates 700 men as necessary.

You will post the line, and notify him that he may withdraw his pickets.

The Cavalry force below, will be ordered to report to you.

Very respectfully, Yr. Obt. Servant,

___ Danl. Butterfield,

Major Genl. & Chief of Staff
