         General,

                  Genl. Sedgwick sends enclosed dispatch from Genl. Hooker, also the deserter sent up by you this morning who will furnish detailed information in relation to the troops in your front.

John Lyons, 9th Louisiana, Hay’s Brigade; 3 lines battle—strong picket in Bowling Green Road—strongest line of battle just below Battery 1/2 way to Fredericksburg; line of battle crosses[?] RR and 2 or 3 Brigades front ____ _____.

         Very few below low ravine; 2 or 3 Batteries other side of Mas. Picket 1/2 circle 800 yds from river ___ pickets 400 or 500 or distant was acting as scout & this way got off.  D.H. Hills Div. in peril[?] _______ Maj. & extends to their left and gained Early Divis.; Cavalry pickets extend to Port Royal, Louisiana Brigade at Port Royal—rifle pits extend up to F. in rear of RR.  Know nothing farther up than this.

         Strong pickets in the Bowling Green Road; there line of Battle is strong & extend from the left 1/2 way to Frederick, being what is as far as I have been up, extends along the Rail Road and is strongest just at the foot of the hill where the Batteries by the ___ the ____ (it is very strong there) it crosses the Rail road there and runs[?] in angle to ____ the crossing of the Bowling Green Road ____ the map a _____.  D.H. Hills Div. extends from the Maj. ____ ___ to the foot of the hill where the Batteries are near the Hamilton ____ Early Div. is next in the left is McLaws[?] & Anderson ___ up to Fredericksburg there are batteries in the pine woods over[?] the Massaponax on Hills right.  A.P. Hills Div. is the only one which has left & [illegible].

        

         When we crossed ______ Apr. 29 they had but about 4 pieces on the hill at Hamilton & one Battery between that and Fredericksburg—one or two pairs ___ the Massaponax.
