City Hotel New York Dec 22nd 1831
I left Philad yesterday morning about 3 o¹clock kept the stage to Perth Amboy, where we took the Steamboat Swan, and arrived here about 4 PM. We were in sight of the ocean several times & passed a ship & Brig both in full sail.
When I came here Mr. Willard the Bar Keeper informed me that no steamboat for Providence until Saturday, when if the River would be clear The Benjm Franklin would start for the last time this season. The best way for me to go on, would be in the stage which leaves this every morning for Boston at 7 o¹clock AM I then went to the stage office3, but all the sets were taken for to day¹s stage. I intend for tomorrow, and will leave this in the morning, travel all night and be at Boston next afternoon (Saturday) If I get there time enough I will report myself that afternoon if not I must wait until Monday. Mr. Coleman sent the letters round about 9 o¹clock one from Mr. Coleman to Francis Coffin Esq & one from Mr. Jackson to Peter A. Thatcher Esq.
I visited the Navy Yard this morning saw the Slop St. Louis lately arrived, and a Frigate in the water, but not finished.
Several midshipman from the St. Louis have been here I did not get acquainted with them.
I have not been out much, as one of my feet hurt me so, I can scarcely walk.
This is a very large & handsome furnished house, a great many people set down to tables. Breakfast from ½ past 8 until 10. dinner from 3 until 6 coffee & tea at 6 supper at 9.
Give my love to all the family
Your affectionate Son
John Reynolds Esq
