Hd.Qrs. [in?] Washington
March 7, 1861
Dear Sir,
Several years ago I
said to you that I should offer you the first vacancy for an aide-de-camp that
might occur in my staff. The
resignation of Lt. Col. Lay has created such vacancy. I now have the pleasure of saying that that [sic] I shall be
glad if you will accept it. I have
thought of no one else for the place.
Yrs. with great respect,
Winfield Scott
Lieut. Col. Reynolds
