Diagnothian and Goethean Literary Society Records

Introduction
The Diagnothian Debating Society was founded in 1835 by Samuel Reed Fisher at
the classical school of the Theological Seminary of the German Reformed Church
in
York, PA. Fisher had been involved in
a debating society during his years at Jefferson College and wanted to bring
that experience to the students in York. By June of 1835, the group grew large
enough to be split into two groups
which took the names Diagnothian and Goethean. The Goethean society was named
in honor of the recently deceased German poet, novelist and playwright Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The origin of the name Diagnothian is much less
straightforward. Tradition holds that it was named after one of the Literary
societies that its founder Samuel Reed Fisher (a Reformed Seminary student) belonged
to when he attended Jefferson College (later Washington and Jefferson). This
has been largely refuted as no such named societies existed at Jefferson College.
Another story says that the name came from Diogenes, the Greek skeptic. A third
story says that the name Diagnothian was derived from a University of Edinburg,
Scotland society called the Diagnostic Society founded in 1816. The best explanation,
with the most evidence to support it, is that the name Diagnothian is derived
from the Greek term for "thorough knowledge" which reflected the philosophy
of the debating and literary society. This information can been seen in an article
by J. Gabriel Neville in the Journal of the Lancaster County Historical Society
Vol. 93, no. 4, 1991.
When the classical school evolved into Marshall College (established in Mercersburg
in November 1835), the societies came with it. The groups
attracted large enough
memberships that money was raised from members and alumni to build Society Halls
on the Marshall College Campus. When Marshall College merged with Franklin College
in 1850 and moved to Lancaster
in 1853, the societies were forced to abandon their society halls which were
less than six years old. To compensate the societies for their losses, the Board
of Trustees of Franklin and Marshall provided each society with $1000 and a no
interest loan for the same amount to aid the construction of Society Halls on
the Franklin and Marshall campus. The societies flourished after the Civil War
increasing their memberships dramatically.
Especially popular were the annual oratorical contests which were sponsored by
the groups. Membership in the societies began to decline around World War I when
a rule requiring students to
be members of one or another of the societies was rescinded by the Faculty.
The Society's Libraries were disbanded in 1920 and their collections integrated
into the College's collection. Because of
declining memberships, the societies merged into one in 1955 taking the name
Diagnothian. The group disappeared from existence in the early 1960's but was
revived in 1989.
Series Arrangement
The Diagnothian and Goethean Literary Society Records are organized into three series. Series I consist of the Goethean Literary Society Records. Series II is the records of the Diagnothian Literary Society. Series III consists of Combined Society event records. Series are subdivided into sub-series relating to type of material.
