F&M From the Air

This picture shows the F&M campus, circa 1910. The college expanded massively between 1858 and 1910, although Goethean, Old Main, and Diagnothian all look the same.
Stahr Hall or the "Science Building", which later became Stager Hall, is shown in this picture. Built in 1900-1902 as the college's new Science Building, Stahr Hall later received two new extended wings on the College Avenue side, a red brick covering over the white brick walls, and a drastic renovation which moved the entrance to the other side and completely redid the interior. These all made it look like it does today, so vastly different than 1910.
The statue in front of the library, facing College Ave., is currently in Buchanan Park by Herman Arts. Buchanan Park doesn't exist, and please notice the lack of any development aside from farmland in the region beyond the college. The library, you'll notice, looks different than today. In 1910, Watts-DePeyster Library stood on the present location of Shadek-Fackenthal. Built in 1897, Watts-DePeyster Library was eventually razed in 1937 to make room for its successor because although it was beautiful, the library was also far too small for a campus growing as fast as F&M. Distler is also visible, peeking over the trees.
Beyond Distler and the Science Building, you can see one building, looking somewhat like our current main library, standing alone on the present location of Hartman Green. The F&M Academy Building housed the F&M Academy, the prep school affiliated with the College until the Academy closed in 1942. The building then served as a student center until 1977, when it was knocked down.
